career choice expo

Cell C recognises that despite these successes of the Take a Girl Child to Work Day® project over the last five years, there is still remains a need to extend the programme to the remote rural schools which by virtue of distance and lack of companies to host girl children are not able to benefit from the project.

To address this problem Cell C, working in collaboration with the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa, launched the Career Choice Expos in seven provinces in 2007. The career choice expo focuses on industries such as telecommunications, engineering, IT, mining and commerce where there is a high level of skills shortage among women. The Career Choice Expo was introduced to extend the impact of Take a Girl Child to Work Day beyond the day.

girl child bursary fund

In 2007 Cell C established the Girl Child Bursary Fund as an extension of Take a girl Child To Work Day® to enable qualifying girl children from disadvantaged backgrounds to gain access to tertiary education. Funds are being raised through SMS’s where the public can sms the word “Girl” to the number 38060 and all proceeds raised from the sms campaign will be matched by Cell C.

Over and above the funds being raised through the sms campaign, Cell C has received a corporate donation to the value of R100,000 towards the bursary fund from one of South Africa’s largest financial services organisations, ABSA Bank. This show of support by ABSA Bank came at the back of Cell C’s decision to take the Take a girl Child to Work Day project to another level.

initiative awards

The awards are presented to companies that have gone the extra mile by maintaining relationships with the schools hosted and providing further support beyond Take a Girl Child to Work Day®.
